Jan. 9th, 2009 @ 02:23 pm My first bus blog
Current Location: DTA Bus Route #6
Current Mood: Oddly Elated
Current Music: Jick and Skullhead Show

I've decided to start a bus log, where I regale the disinterested public with tales (mostly of woe) from my adventures on public transit.

This is mostly a test to see whether I can write the blog on my iPod without Internet, and submit it, without having to do lots of dicking around.

----------------------------------------------------------

And the test was a failure, in the sense that I can't write the post and hit "submit" and have it go into an outbox until it picks up Internet and shoots it off (like an email).

So, either I need to find a new app, write my updates in email form, use this app anyway, find a different blog platform, or..I dunno.

So, Alicia and I are riding a Jefferson Lines bus back to Duluth, after attending a Snow Patrol concert last night. We get on the bus at Coffman Union, and are treated to a tour of Minneapolis and St. Paul as the bus makes its rounds to a number of other stops, picking up all manner of passengers.

We head up I-35, stopping at towns along the way to pick up and drop off passengers. Surprisingly, the bus has a number of people on it, even more surprisingly, there are only a handful of college age riders.

The rest seem to be just people who don't own a car, for various reasons.

Sitting behind us a few seats is a mother with a young child. The child spends most of the ride asleep, but shortly before we hit the rest stop at Rush City, the kids starts crying.

The mother starts trying to quiet down, with such effective and sympathetic methods as saying "shhhh", "shut up", and be quiet!", all in a tone of voice that sounds anything but maternal.

At the rest stop, while we're waiting for the bus to clear so we can get out to stretch our legs, the kid wanders down the aisle and stops at Alicia's row. S/he stands next to the seat and stares at Alicia and myself, not smiling, not showing any kind of emotioin. We smile back, and talk in soothing voices, and laugh, and all around try to be cheerful in an attempt to get the child to lighten up. The child continues to stare, and then walks away.

Amused, Alicia and I go to get off the bus. As we prepare to go down the steps, we notice an old woman (also a passenger), standing in front of the bus. She is pressed up against the windshield staring blankly at those inside the bus with a strange expression on her face

Alicia and I do a double take and suppress our laughter until we get out of the bus and into the Holiday.

Mar. 23rd, 2007 @ 01:43 pm I HATE AIRLINE MOVIES!
Current Mood: pissed offpissed off
WHAT THE FUCK!?

So, the movie on the flight back was called "Deja Vu". It starts with a big ferry full of sailors going on leave, and their families, and lots of children and stuff. Then the ferry blows up, because of a car bomb. As we're flying, we're treated to images of burning people leaping out of a burning ship into the harbor and sinking and drowning.

I say again. WHAT THE FUCK?!

That is NOT the kind of thing I want to be watching when I'm traveling. I don't want to watch things about terrorism, transportation exploding, or burning children falling to their deaths. The worse thing is that their are video screens over every other row, so its hard not to see whats going on.

You'll remember my earlier objections to the Bond film on the flight down. It turns out it wasn't quite as violent as I thought it would be. It seems that most of the objectionable scenes that I thought were going to be in it were the ones shown in the previews. What I didn't expect was that the movie was just going to be a crappy one.

But I would LOVE to see that movie compared to this one. Why do the airlines put up movies that are NOT neccesarily family friendly? When I'm flying, the thing I want to be reminded of least is terrorists blowing things up. Violence is something I'd rather not watch, but I can just look away, I guess.

I've spent the last week at the USITT conference in Phoenix, Arizona. I had a pretty good time, and I learned a lot about different theatre things, as well as making a few contacts and being exposed to the theatre community in a more professional setting.

I don't want to go back to class after a 3.5 day weekend! I liked playing in the snow.
